Šantra paprastoji yra apie ‘0,40m. į viršų ir 0,5 m. į plotį užaugantis daugiametis augalas. Žydi apie 6-11 mėnesį. Augalas yra hemofroditas (apsidulkina pats).
Reikalingas gerai sausinamas dirvožemis.
Draugiškas bitėms. Aprūpina vietinę laukinę gamtą maistu, užuoveja (prieglobsčiu) ir pan. Augalas aromatingas. Kvapnus šviežias ir maltas.
